HDR Configuration Guide

Getting true HDR out of Windows requires bypassing several layers of OS color management. UMedia handles most of this automatically, but checking these settings ensures peak brightness and accurate P3/BT.2020 color volumes.

1. Windows Settings

2. UMedia Configuration (HDR Passthrough)

If you have a high-end HDR TV (like an LG OLED) connected, you want the TV to do the tone-mapping. UMedia will pass the raw BT.2020 signal to the display.

# Ensure GPU rendering is HQ
profile=gpu-hq

# Target the display's color space natively
target-colorspace-hint=yes

3. UMedia Configuration (SDR Tone-mapping)

If you are playing an HDR movie on a standard SDR monitor, UMedia must tone-map the 10,000 nit signal down to your monitor's capabilities, otherwise the image looks incredibly dark and grey.

profile=gpu-hq
# Tell UMedia your monitor is SDR
target-trc=srgb
# Set your monitor's actual peak brightness (e.g., 350 nits)
target-peak=350
# Use a high-quality tone-mapping algorithm
tone-mapping=mobius
